In Seen From Somewhere, the glass engravings are inspired by a NASA film clip showing a rotating horizon where the sun disappears behind the edge and then reappears. As the sculpture’s light source rotates, the engravings are illuminated, creating a real-time animation. Khadivi has engraved the motion into the glass so that the circle remains visible through each transparent layer, never disappearing behind a horizon – a manifested fantasy of a perception beyond that of the camera and the human eye. Khadivi abstracted the motif to approach the geometric and numerical components that form digital images.
Material: engravings on 29 flat glass sheets, metal, rotating light sources
